I tend to keep computers for a long time so this point is important to me. I understand now that Core i9 is quite recent in Macs, so there are likely no data about failures due to heat stress, but I would like to know if there are some elements allowing to extrapolate.
For example heat output of i9 compared to i7 and longevity of i7 machines. On the other hand, an i9 machine is likely to perform better in future macOS updates than an i5 one. This iMac is going to be used for web browsing, e-mails, text processing OpenOffice, LaTeXlight coding, perhaps playing some games, occasional photo, video 4K and audio processing, occasional use of virtual machines VMWarewatching some videos through iTunes and DVD Player and running X11 nothing heavy though, just ssh sessions and text editors for coding.
So, which one? A six-core i5 at 3. So, I suggest i5. I think it is plenty. No discount on these points. I have seen a 4-core i7 MBP to age really well. It is almost 5 years old and it still runs so smoothly under Mojave. This is why I seriously consider the i9.
I know beforehand that macOS updates will be painless with it for a long time. Only worry at this point is the heat output of i9 and the component wear because of this.
I remember having read in the past about some more or less serious issues with some i7 iMac models because of heat, but I never followed the cases to have a clear picture. Not sure where the i9 stands in this.
It's actually the opposite in a lot of scenarios. Just went through this decision to replace my mini. Go for the i5 and the biggest SSD you can afford. It's the fastest computer i've ever used for anything, paired with the best monitor i've ever used. I've had one time the fans kicked on - I'm still not sure why but I assume it was some big indexing task. Overall it's been shockingly cool. I think for most uses the i5 would be more than fast enough. It screams but I doubt most people need that speed.

Have you tested your iMac under such situations? For example what about heat and noise when you transform 4K video for 30 minutes? Actually doing that right now. There's no throttling going on right now that I can see.

iMac 5K 27-inch (2019) review
It beat the Mac Pro cylinder in 9 out of 11 tests. Graphics cards available today blow away anything available the last time Apple bothered to update its offerings.
If Apple insists on designing computers that cannot be user-upgraded, or upgraded only through bottlenecks like Thunderbolt which yes are slower than internal PCI expansionsthen Apple deserves all the scorn it gets from pro level Mac users.
Finally, businesses that have historically run many Mac Pro machines are not going to replace them with Hacintoshes. The maintenance nightmare is just too great. Unfortunately, many of them have already switched to Windows machines. Apple is likely to get few of those back. Now, if you as an individual want to go the Hacintosh route, I say go for it.

I'm also an amateur photographer and I'll be getting into drone photography. So now for me question:. Will there be a big enough performance jump to get the i9 over the i5?
I know it will be faster, but is there going to be enough performance increase to justify the cost? I'll upgrade the RAM myself as I always do.
